Explanatory text Concept Free Space
Healing is a physical as well as an emotional process; healing and recovery processes are promoted through contact with nature. Healing processes in connection with positive memories, especially of landscapes, are described in studies by doctors and therapists as very successful and lasting. In this context, contact with a familiar landscape is of particular importance for patients. An example of a healing landscape is Franklin Park in Boston, designed by Frederik Law Olmsted in 1885. Olmsted created a convalescent landscape for soldiers returning from the Civil War, based on the rural landscape structures from the home regions of the returnees.
The new clinic campus takes up this concept of supporting healing processes with the creation of a convalescent landscape and playfully interprets the landscapes of the Alpine (pre)countryside with the topography and landscape elements. In the same spirit, some areas of the existing building stock are not completely demolished but converted into gardens and areas for passive recreation.

Excerpt from the jury's assessment:

Open spaces
The adjacent landscape elements of forest and avenue are incorporated and become part of the new landscape design. In the park, free structures overlap with the new green structures of the buildings in an exciting way and thus allow for a variety of uses of the open space. Functionality Overall, the floor plans have a structurally functional initial situation, which still has detail problems, but which appear to be solvable.

Urban design
The work envisages loosely arranged atrium buildings along a magistral. The individual building blocks are distributed in a balanced manner in a "new" site. The connection to the patient garden in the south is both at ground level and via gently sloping ramps leading to a green roof area above level E01. All in all, an excellent solution with a high quality of stay in the entire open space area. However, a high value must be placed here on the technical feasibility in terms of long-term functionality. The inner development takes place along the magistrale, which also offers a high quality of stay due to its generous design. Daylight reaches the most important circulation areas via glazed inner courtyards. From there, the vertical accesses and the control centres are very easy to find. Orientation is therefore very good. A ward block is planned as an interim solution between the DIAG and the multi-storey car park, which is problematic in terms of building law because it exceeds the building area.
