Cemetery Friedental, Luzern

The Friedental Cemetery, which is located in the north of Lucerne on a high plateau between Reuss and Rotsee, has since 1885 served as an important, nondenominational municipal place of remembrance. It was gradually enlarged in several steps to reach its dimensions today, in which, however, no garden designers had so far been involved. A comprehensive park maintenance plan now provides an opportunity to intensify the contemplative, tranquil character of the location in terms of landscape architecture as well. The various areas, are accentuated with diverse tree themes, whether the rows of false cypresses along the paths and the loosely distributed blue cedars in the older section, or the different “clouds of trees” over several burial grounds in the newer section. The characteristic hedges surrounding the burial grounds have been retained. New facilities for burials are provided by the tree graves in the valley cemetery and the fields of oaks in the easternmost section of the cemetery.
