Master Plan for the Bundesarchiv

With its magnificent inventory of trees, the open spaces of the Bundesarchiv (Federal Archive) form a welcome oasis in the orthogonal pattern of the perimeter block development. The central axis is accentuated with a pool of water.

With its magnificent inventory of trees, the open spaces of the Federal Archive form a welcome oasis in the orthogonal pattern of the perimeter development in the center of Berlin.

Accompanied by representative pools of water, a broad band of paths running north to south leads to the main entrance of the Federal Archive as a central development element. From here, one reaches the park areas located at the back via an orthogonal path structure adjoining the surrounding network of streets. As a result of the placement of the parking spaces at the edges, new, publically accessible areas for spending time are created in the expansive lawn area. Embedded in a memorable open space structure consisting of pruned hedges, bands of perennials, and meadow flowers, small seating areas invite visitors to relax and spend time. The old, inventory of trees that characterizes the site is retained and is supplemented with specimen trees and shrubs such as magnolias or tulip trees. With their graceful structure, rich blossoms and bright autumn colors, they attract attention throughout the year and form vibrant accents in the clearly arranged basic structure.
